Filling twenty-four goodie bags: counts, kits and kids

The arithmetic of a goodie bag defeats people because shops sell small toys and craft kits in packs of four while parties come in multiples of twenty-four. Here is the maths done once for a class of kids, the sorting method that stops the last four bags being the sad ones, and the point at which a craft kit each beats a bag each.

The count

Six items a bag is the number that reads as generous without becoming a second party bag by weight. Twenty-four bags at six items is 144 pieces, so a 200-piece assortment covers a class with enough left to repair the two bags that split. If you are running four items a bag, which is plenty for under-fives, a 200-piece box reaches fifty bags and the 250-piece mix will carry you through two parties.

Sort before you fill

Do not fill bag by bag from the box. Empty the whole assortment onto a table and sort by kind first, so you can see that there are thirty of one thing and only eight of another. Then lay the bags out in a grid and go across them one kind at a time, the way you would deal cards. This is the single difference between every bag feeling equal and the last four getting whatever is left at the bottom.

What to put in and what to leave out

Every bag wants one thing that works immediately, one thing that lasts a week, and one thing that is purely decorative. A mini fidget spinner is the first. A sticker sheet or a small puzzle is the second. The third is whatever is brightest. Leave out anything edible unless you know the allergy list, and leave out anything that needs batteries, which is the most common complaint parents make about bags they receive.

If it is a prize box, not a party

Classroom prize boxes work on a different cycle. You want variety across a whole term rather than equality across one afternoon, because the same child will choose from it ten times. That is what the 1000-piece assortment with 31 kinds is for: it is not a bigger party bag, it is a different problem, and it is usually refilled in September and still going in May.

Goodie bags or craft kits for kids?

There is a number at which bags stop making sense. Under about eight guests, a craft kit each is cheaper per head than a decent bag and it solves the other problem of a children's party, which is the hour between the food and the parents. An art kit per child turns the party into the activity: everyone is making something together, nobody is sold a single correct outcome, and the finished thing goes home instead of a bag of plastic.

What goes in a mix, kind by kind

Sticker sheets in a dozen designs, bouncy balls, stretchy creatures, small puzzles, mini spinners, a unicorn, and the sort of craft bits that get taped to a door. None of it is powered by batteries. There are no filters to click through and no empty padding in the count — 21 kinds in the 200-piece set, 31 in the thousand. Keep two kinds back in a cupboard and the box reads as restocked in January rather than picked over.

The part worth getting right

The fun of a goodie bag is the moment of being handed one, not the contents, and adults consistently overthink it. Nobody's creativity arrives through a bouncy ball. What you are buying is four seconds of magic at the door and the joy of a child who got a thing. If you want an imaginative experience with real possibilities in it, buy the activity kit and let them discover a small playful world for an afternoon; if you want twenty-four children out of the door happy, buy the mix.
