Knick knacks or nick nacks? The spelling behind nicknack toys

People arrive at nicknack toys having typed the name four different ways, so here is the short answer about the spelling and then the longer one about where the word came from and why we dropped the letters we dropped.

The standard spelling

Knick-knack, with the silent k on both halves, is the form the major dictionaries list first, usually hyphenated and often also accepted as the single word knickknack. Nick nack is a common phonetic spelling rather than an error anybody will stop you for, and it turns up constantly in shop signs and search boxes. If you are writing formally, use knick-knack.

Where the word comes from

It is a reduplication of knack, an older English word meaning a trick or a clever little device, doubled the way words like flip-flop and chit-chat are doubled. By the eighteenth century it meant a small ornament of no great value, which is roughly what it still means: the small thing on the shelf that is there because somebody liked it.

Why we spell ours nicknack

One word, no k at the front, lower case. We make small toys that cost very little and get handed out by the dozen, which is the honest end of the word, and dropping the silent letters felt right for a brand whose products fit inside a plastic egg. It also means nobody has to guess where the hyphen goes.

What a knick-knack is worth

Not much individually, which is the point. The thousand-piece assortment on our party favor shelf is a knick-knack factory by any definition, and the value is not in any single piece but in the fact that there is one for every child in the room. That has been the useful meaning of the word for three hundred years.

What nicknack toys are, in practice

A mini spinner, a pack of sticky balloons, a plastic pig, a roll of stickers, a block that clicks onto another block. None of it is designed to last a decade and none of it pretends to. We are a small company, we are not the world's largest toy maker, and we are absolutely fine saying that the appeal here is quantity and variety rather than heirloom quality. People find us through a prize box and stay for the counts on the label.

The serious part of an unserious word

Cheap does not mean careless. Safety testing happens on the finished article, an authentic nicknack pack carries our ring mark, and the age band on the back is the one the toy was actually designed around — including the toddler lines, where the rules are strictest. If you have looked at the pictures across our shelves you will have noticed the same thing twice: a count, and a band.

Why small things matter anyway

Every parent has watched a child ignore an expensive present and play for an hour with the packaging. The stories we get sent are all variations on that. A real knick knack earns its place through playtime, not price: the builder sorting junk into piles, the creativity of a game invented around a rubber frog, the joy of being handed something that is yours. That is the whole business. Our cats are unimpressed, our customers are not, and the coolest toy in any room is usually the one that cost forty cents.
